On the easel: tomatoes, garlic and wine

I’ve been painting some fairly tasty subjects lately. First, I’ve been working on this tomato and garlic pair. I like the garlic alright, but I’ve been struggling a bit with the tomato and what may have been a poor choice in background colors…but they jury is still out on that, I need to what for the finished result to judge. What you see below is my second time painting over the tomato, but needs a lot more contrast. I need to wait for it to dry again. The only time constraint is that this is a subject from life, and I need to finish it before the tomato rots…hrm…maybe I should grab a photo of that.

Next is my first venture into my new fascination with glass. I am really impressed with those individuals who can paint clear glass, and I decided to give it a shot myself with a glass of (I think) Cabernet. I can’t remember exactly, I took the photo about a week ago. I’m not yet willing to paint glass from life because of how much the colors will change with angle and time of day…but maybe once I get faster I will. : )

I am definitely not done with this one. I need to wait for it to dry because the bottom has a lot of white highlights that I can’t do yet because painting white on top of any other color just makes it that color, and not white.
