And I Begin Again
I have struggled in the recent past on how to organize my many web presences. I work as a graphic designer and websites developer plus I have tons of ideas and hobbies and I live on the internet. This means I have many online presences to maintain. I have wanted to commit to a blog for a long time, but with all my different ideas and interests I couldn’t figure out how. Should I have different blogs for different topics? In the beginning that seemed mistakenly appropriate. I thought different people will be interested in different things. However, how many blogs and accounts can one person maintain? I installed a few of them with an explicit purpose and quickly proceeded to do nothing but a post or two in each. It’s just too much.
About a month ago I was having dinner with Jeff Cohen who is definitely more hardcore into blogging and online media than I am. After lamenting for a while he told me that I needed to have everything in once place. I stewed over this for about a month, and did nothing. Eventually I started longing for a place I could just put everything without always having to evaluate who might want to read it and where to put it. This is, after all, about me. Not to mention that diluting content quantity kinda sucks. I have constantly changing interests and the freedom to have a blog that caters to me sounds rewarding. This is as opposed to me catering to some invented perception about an audience that I don’t yet have…because I’m not blogging…
So here I am, another WordPress install, another opening post, plus two posts from my last two installs. But this time I am giving myself the freedom to talk about anything that I feel compelled to. I feel hopeful that this blog will have some duration.
As another exercise of restraint I decided not to custom build this WP theme. By day I build lots of custom themes through my company Graphic Karma and I enjoy it. This however is about the content, and I feel like 1) I don’t want to get ahead of myself again by putting time into yet another blog theme when the priority is writing posts and 2) out of respect to the many types of content I may have. I decided that all I wanted was something minimal and monochrome. I’m not going to even think of going custom until or unless I have a thriving blog…if ever. I happen to really like this theme anyway, with a few of my recent photos.
The one exception to the everything in one place idea is my corporation. I operate as a professional, small business owner and I don’t feel that hitching business and personal together is conducive to portraying that truth. Graphic Karma is focused in a purpose, I however am not. That is where I draw the line.
We’ll see how it goes.
